Videotape testimony of Abraham F., who was born in Łomża, Poland in 1919. He recalls his Hasidic family; attending law school in Warsaw; being drafted into the Polish military in 1939; antisemitic incidents; German invasion; imprisonment in a POW camp; returning to Soviet-occupied Łomża; fleeing to L'viv with a Zionist group; their unsuccessful escape attempt; organizing a kibbutz in Vilna in 1940; bringing his brother there; working in a Jewish theater in Kovno; German invasion; an unsuccessful escape attempt; ghettoization; his underground activities; volunteering for a labor camp to join his fiancee; deportation to Stutthof, Flossenbürg, Dachau, and Landsberg in winter 1942; sharing food with his fiancee's brothers; slave labor; assistance from a German foreman; and transfer to Litoměřice. Mr. F. recounts assistance from a Czech farmer; liberation by United States troops in April 1945; recovering in a Czech hospital; working for Berih'ah in Vienna; reunion with his fiancee in Wels displaced persons camp; marriage in Munich; working for Sokhnut; assistance from UNRRA and the Joint; and emigration to the United States in 1949. He notes the importance of faith to his survival.

Happy New Year from AVP!

With 2020 behind us, we dive head first into 2021 with gusto! So this year’s card is notably a New Year card, with an enthusiastic emphasis on what lies ahead, but with a nod toward the humanity that arose from our collective 2020 virtual realities.

For years we have spent time with everyone in a professional setting, getting glimpses here and there into the people behind the positions and roles that bring us to the same endeavors and events. Something that resulted from the virtual live-and-direct-from-home video conferencing experience, for which we can be grateful, is the vulnerability and humanity that resulted. We got to see into each other’s homes to see what hung on the wall, what books were on the bookshelf, what photographs were pinned to boards, what treasured knickknacks sat in the background representing family heirlooms and past travels. We got to see each other's family members wander through the background, kids needing the helping hand of a parent, dogs nudging an arm for pets, cat tails seemingly appearing from nowhere, and lots more. It hasn’t always been pretty, or easy, or convenient, or funny at the time, but it has been real and something we are all in together. We have offered each other grace and latitude, compassion and empathy, understanding and care. We have been presented with the fullness of people living their whole lives in the same space on the other side of the camera and microphone. It is a level of disclosure, vulnerability, and intimacy that no one would willingly offer or wish for in a professional setting. Though, it has in fact brought us closer together. We have brought each other into our whole lives and worlds in a way that never would have happened otherwise, and there is a beauty in this fact.

Our card this year is a gesture toward this sentiment. The layout represents a videoconference grid and each of the animals you see are dearly loved pets of AVPeeps. You probably saw and/or heard many of them over the past year if you have been on the other side of the camera and microphone from us. In this way, we are letting you all into our whole lives a little bit more with the hopes of hanging on to the positive aspects of our collective circumstances. The illustrations and stop motion animation were done by Stephanie Housley of Coral & Tusk.

Every complex digital file format requires the presence of self-describing and predictable internal binary structures. This internal structure is responsible for framing the stored content within the file so playback software can acquire the correct configuration details to reconstitute this encoded information. This applies to videos (e.g., mp4, mov, avi), audio files (e.g., wav, mp3), still images (e.g., jpg, tif, png), serialized packages (e.g., zip, tar), database files (e.g., sql), and file systems (e.g., FAT32, HFS), among many other content types. Traditional approaches to digital file forensics focus on the content of the file itself. Signal analysis takes the output of the reconstructed payload of the file and processes this output to identify traces that are targets of the particular investigation method. Semantic analysis identifies recognizable text that can be examined for further meaning. Signal and semantic analysis of digital media are both necessary and fruitful approaches. Our research indicates that an additional approach, structural analysis, which targets the internal structure (or, the syntax) of digital file formats, is a viable method to identify provenance, to detect tampering, and to propose approaches to file repair or reconstruction.

MDQC stands for Metadata Quality Control, and it allows users to do just that in an effective and automated manner. MDQC allows users to create rules on embedded metadata, scan a set of files, and report on the conformance of each file against the user-defined rules.MDQC greatly minimizes the time needed to QC large batches of files.
